Digital music startup Jamendo runs out of steam, mulls sale
Jamendo is running out of money after failing to raise a follow-up round of venture capital. The startup was looking to raise 1.5 million euros (roughly $2.15 million) after securing a ’significant amount’ in Series A funding back in June 2007. The company failed to come to an agreement with Mangrove Capital Partners, its original backer, and a potential new investor.

when shannon moore had the idea to start a band, he knew it could only work if the music had the same raw emotion and integrity as the music he was inspired by. thats a lot of music and some really big shoes to fill. at a young age he was obsessing over music from artists like prince, isaac hayes, funkadelic, james brown, metallica, slayer bad brains, cro-mags etc. after being personally mentored and rooted by legendary guitarist gary (dr know) miller (bad brains) and legendary drummer mackie jayson (cro-mags) he developed the confidence to write and perform music of his own. what he was looking for was a way to combine the sound the of the hardcore of the 80’s an early 90’s with the metal of now. after running into his friend, guitarist jared drace one random day on the lower east side he though that might be the answer he was looking for. he knew jared was into newer bands like in flames, at the gates, and municipal waste. shannon had the idea that with his knowledge of the old and jareds knowledge of the new they could make something special. he emailed jared and they immediately began writing songs together in a loft with no bass player and no heat. shortly after they recruited bass player willie paredes ( astroland, pagoda) and drummer garry sullivan (cro-mags, B 52’s, bernie worrel, TM stevens) and ACTIVATOR was born. when the songs were ready to be recorded they turned to producer friend scott “scotty hard ” harding (medeski martin and wood, dj logic, wu tang, gravediggaz) who recorded what was soon to become the unfortunate lovely EP at his studio in greenpoint. with the help of El-P and his label definitive jux, the “unfortunate lovely EP” will be available soon.

However, a press release claims that “conventional instruments continue to play a great role” in the duo’s music.[2] The album features art by Xavier Veilhan.
The first single from this album, “Once Upon a Time”, can be heard on the group’s MySpace page.[3]
Pocket Symphony debuted on the U.S. Billboard 200 at number 40, with about 17,000 copies sold in its first week.[4]

The musical style performed by Fela Kuti is called Afrobeat, which is a fusion of jazz, funk, psychedelic rock, and traditional West African chants and rhythms. As Iwedi Ojinmah points out in his Article “Baba is Dead – Long Live Baba,” Afrobeat also borrows heavily from the native “tinker pan” African-style percussion that Kuti acquired while studying in Ghana with Hugh Masakela, under the uncanny Hedzoleh Soundz. Afrobeat is also characterized by having vocals, and musical structure, along with jazzy, funky horn sections.

On September 15, 2009, Brooklyn Vegan reported that Pavement are scheduled to perform multiple benefit show dates in New York City’s Central Park beginning on September 21, 2010.[27] Official statements by the band, label, venue and promoter were released on September 17, 2009 confirming the reunion. The announcement included one concert in Central Park and the promise of a tour, but said that the reunion may only be a one-off event. It said, “Please be advised this tour is not a prelude to additional jaunts and/or a permanent reunion.”[28] Tickets for the first Central Park concert sold out in two minutes,[29] leading to the announcement of three more shows at the same venue.[29]
In an interview with Rolling Stone, Scott Kannberg spoke about the band’s future and introduced new member DJ Swarley: “We’ll do some rehearsing in the new year. The Central Park shows, we’ll probably end up doing one or two of those. There’s festivals and stuff that we’re talking to, like Coachella. After that, anything that happens in the future is in the future.”[30]. The band have since confirmed that they will also play shows in the UK [4].

Jaguar Love is one of two bands that have sprung out of the 2007 break-up of experimental hardcore band The Blood Brothers (the other being Past Lives, comprising ex-singer Jordan Blilie, ex-drummer Mark Gajadhar, ex-bassist Morgan Henderson, and original Blood Brothers guitarist Devin Welch). In Jaguar Love, singer/pianist Johnny Whitney and guitarist Cody Votolato are ex-members of that band, and Pretty Girls Make Graves member Jay Clark was the drummer: Due to unforeseen differences, Jay Clark has left the band. As of Januay 21, 2008 the band has signed to the independent label Matador. The Blood Brothers’ music could be described as a schizophrenic split between raging hardcore punk and jagged art-punk with Surrealistic lyrics. The three bands that developed as side-projects during The Blood Brothers’ existence—Whitney’s experimental post-hardcore bands Soiled Doves & Neon Blonde and the band’s other lead vocalist Jordan Billie & Votolato’s hardcore/thrash band Head Wound City—illustrated this. Jaguar Love has so far shown many characteristics found in Whitney’s past side-projects, albeit there is no electronica influence as heard in Neon Blonde and the “spazzcore” elements of Soiled Doves have been relatively toned down. In favor of the chaotic sound for those bands is the feeling of a more fully-fleshed out band with more concentration on melody, a lyrical maturation, and traditional songwriting that stylishly culls influence from indie rock, art-punk, soul, post-hardcore, jazz-rock, and glam metal. They are currently touring after finishing writing and recording the album [album]take me to the sea[/album] which is due out in august with production and recording duties being handled primarily by Clarke. Whitney’s clothing company Crystal City, which he co-owns with his wife Amy, has already designed and produced a handful of t-shirts for Jaguar Love.
